Critics Agree!

Bedecked with multicolored lights illuminating its name, Pieces stands out even on Christopher Street. Inside, a bevy of disco balls reflect Christmas lights adorning the walls. Every night’s a show, but the equally colorful clientele get a chance to shine at the ever-popular Karaoke Tuesdays, featuring a diverse selection of songs (though not without the requisite Judy and Barbra). Liquid Brunch on Saturday and Sunday afternoons afford ample opportunities to cruise for a cheap date to go with your cheap drink.

Critics' Pick

A West Village staple, this comfortably ramshackle neighborhood hangout with homemade decor offers a solid value during its 2 to 8 p.m. happy hour, when you’ll get $3 liquor, beer, and wine. But even after 8 p.m., the drinks are still a value at $6 — and shots are a buck. If you’re around on the weekend, you might head this way for drag queen bingo after a boozy brunch.

Best of NYC Award

A personal fave of mine, ranked in order of sheer fabulousness, factoring in their ambience, staff, events, and history. This is the gay Cheers — a haven to come back to again and again, for all its no-frills splendor.

"Best Gay Bars"

Karaoke, wild? At Pieces (8 Christopher St.; 212-929-9291), the singers are fierce, the booze is cheap, and the décor is cheesy—a potent admixture. You’ll get a heavy dose of sparkly rainbow décor replete with multiple disco balls. The extremely perky (and boyishly cute) staff hosts a different party every night, each with a different theme.
