Pieces is losing its lease (the building will be gutted) and needs your help to stay in business. We have found a new location nearby on West 8th St. and have secured Community Board support for our liquor license. Unfortunately, some tenants on the block we're moving to as well as the superintendent in the building are afraid of having a gay bar near their apartments and have put intense pressure on our new landlord. On Monday, August 1, she decided only minutes before signing our fully negotiated lease that she wants to rent the spot to someone else (a sushi restaurant) and put our deal permanently "on hold". Backing out at that point in lease negotiations is unprecedented. If you like hanging out with us and enjoy having an affordable place to drink and have fun in NYC's oldest and most historic gay neighborhood, please explain to her what we convinced the Community Board: Pieces is not a nuisance and will not bother her residential tenants. Please ask her not to break her word and walk away from her agreement with our historic hangout. You can send an email of support to Jane Goldman (the landlord) with copies to Brett (the point person in her office) and Reena (her lawyer). Remember that you are emailing business people who are under no obligation to anyone but themselves. Please be concise and polite about why you think she should honor her word and sign our lease. Hopefully your support can help overcome the homophobia and fears of a few tenants, and Pieces can continue to be a cornerstone of gay Greenwich Village nightlife. For those of you who haven't been following this saga, know that we cannot stay at our current location on Christopher St. There are no other options at this point; we will not look for another home for Pieces, as it can only keep its character in the Village and all viable options there have been fully explored. If we can't move to this exact spot, Pieces will close forever in the spring. We have agreed to do things in the new space, including professional soundproofing and a custom designed sound system, which will ensure that we won't bother our neighbors. |
